Then Ltcdr. Kirkpatrick assumed command of the USS TRITON on her third patrol, making the following three war patrols during which he was awarded the Navy Cross three times, and the Distinguished Service Cross (Army).
After relinquishing command of TRITON, he became the Naval Aide to Fleet Admiral Ernest J. King, in Washington, before being ordered to take command of the newly commissioned Destroyer-Minelayer USS SHEA in September 1944.
Post-war duty consisted of duty as Executive Officer of the battleship USS WISCONSIN, Commander Submarine Division 81, Commander Submarine Squadron 2, Commanding Officer of the USS BREMERTON, Commander Amphibious Group 1, and various naval staff assignments.
Admiral Kirkpatrick's last command was Superintendent of the Naval Academy and as Deputy CNO and Chief of Naval Personnel prior to his retirement in June 1964.
