On War Patrol off Wake Island
on 10 December, 1941, west of the
"international dateline", the USS
TRITON, SS-201, would fire the first
torpedo in offensive action against a
Japanese vessel after the attack on
Pearl Harbor.

USS TRITON, would be the first
United States NAVY submarine to
sink an enemy vessel by deck gun
fire in World War II.  The 3-inch projectiles used had been manufactured by Landsburg Iron and Steel Corporation in Landsburg, Pennsylvania under a sole source procurement.

During her 5th War Patrol, again off
Wake Island, TRITON, on December
23, 1942, performed a critical role
broadcasting a highly accurate, and
necessary, aerial navigation radio
beacon to guide U.S. Army bombers
to the Island.  This would result in the
first bombing attack on Japanese held
territory in World War II.
